New York 43rd in Sales & Excise Tax

New York State ranks 43rd among all states and D.C. in sales and excise tax, two major components in assessing a state's business tax climate. The latest ranking from The Tax Foundation showed New York dropped one spot from 2022 when it ranked 42nd.

New York and New Jersey, 42nd, are the lowest-ranked states in the northeast by almost more than half of any other state. The next lowest-ranked state is Rhode Island, 24th.

The best stats for sales tax are the five without a sales tax, including Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana, and Oregon.

Alabama, Washington, and Louisiana rank at the bottom of the list.

"States that rank poorly on this component have high sales tax rates, high excise tax rates, and complicated sales tax administration," the report states.
