Comptroller: Fiscal Stress for 20 Local Governments

New York State saw a decrease in the number of local governments in distress at the end of 2021, according to a new report by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

In his latest Fiscal Stress Scores report, the comptroller stated that 20 local governments in New York State ended their fiscal year 2021 designated in some form of fiscal stress, down from 30 a year ago. The determinations were based on the State Comptroller’s Fiscal Stress Monitoring System scores.

Comptroller DiNapoli releases fiscal stress scores for municipalities (excluding New York City) twice a year. A press release states that the scores announced on Wednesday are for local governments operating on a calendar year basis for 2021, covering all counties and towns, 44 cities, and 11 villages.
